On September the 1 in 1863 the Barbee Hotel in downtown High Point Guilford County North Carolina was converted into a Wayside Hospital to accommodate the wounded during the Civil War. The above marker is of an 18 year old girl who continued to nurse the sick and wounded even after an outbreak of smallpox. When those with smallpox were moved to a “pest house” Laura went with them and continued her care until the same disease claimed her life. The cemetery is located a few blocks away in downtown High Point from where the hospital (hotel) use to stand. Note on the front “home” page of this site under blogroll you will see Confederate Cemetery. There I have posted photographs and documentation on all the soldier’s markers, their names and regiments. Please feel free to use these photos and the information provided. I only ask that if you choose to post or in anyway publish the photographs and documentation that you give credit to the “Smith Family Archives” at www.bojasmi.wordpress.com.
