Peter & Anna Slaughter Smith

This photo was sent to me from the Stokes County Historical Society and is though to be Peter Smith and his wife Annie Slaughter. Peter is my 3rd Great Grandfather who served during the Civil War with the 2nd NC Infantry Company A. He was captured in 1863 in VA and sent to Fishers Hill then made prisoner at Point Look MD. At the end of August 1863, Point Lookout’s stockade held more than 1,700 Confederate soldiers. The prison population swelled to 9,000 by the end of the year. During the summer of 1864, the prison population grew to 15,500, well more than the stockade’s designed capacity, and reached 20,000 in June 1865. Over 4 thousand prisoners died during the two years of the prison existences. An average of 25 prisoners died every week and these numbers are considered low. Peter was released in 1865 with no recorded of him signing the pledge to the Union.

Peter Smith was born in Stokes County, North Carolina and died on 22 of June 1924 in Meadows, Stokes County, North Carolina. Peter is buried at Clear Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Stokes County. He was the son of John Smith and Elizabeth Brown. Peter married Annie Slaughter on 20 of October 1849 in Stokes County, North Carolina. On 1 September 1862 Peter enlisted with Company A 2nd Battalion North Carolina Infantry in Francisco, Stokes County, North Carolina. He was captured at Fisher’s Hill, Virginia on 22nd of September 1864. Peter was confined at Point Lookout, Maryland until paroled and transferred on 17 March 1865 at Aikens Landing, James River, Virginia for prisoner exchange.
